Increased reliance on the car has threatened the vitality of urban centers, required the construction of massive roads, highways, and parking structures, degraded communities, and socially excluded individuals that do not own vehicles. Its widespread use has worsened dependence on foreign supplies of oil for many countries, inducing price spikes and fuel shocks and transferring wealth to petroleum producers. The allure of the gasoline automobile is somewhat perplexing.
